Jo-Anne Pentz
Cape Town Artist
Co-Founder & Manager

Jo-Anne Pentz is a Cape Town–based artist whose journey with art began later in life but quickly grew into a lifelong passion. After many years in mechanical engineering, Jo-Anne embraced her creativity full-time, immersing herself in painting, photography, and travel. Inspired by the vibrant people, wildlife, and landscapes of South Africa, she refers to her art as “moments in time” — capturing not just an image, but the feelings, scents, and stories behind each scene.
Co-founding Canvas and Craft Studio was Jo-Anne’s way of creating something bigger than her own art. She wanted to build a space where creativity could be shared, where artists and photographers could grow together, and where the next generation could discover the joy of making art. For her, the studio is both a social hub and a safe space; a place to overcome personal challenges, explore self-expression, and connect through creativity.
Her preferred medium is oil, and her favorite subject is the human figure, but her heart lies in seeing others discover their own creative voices. As the current chairlady of the Constantiaberg Art Society, and an exhibiting artist across Cape Town’s galleries and events, Jo-Anne continues to champion art as both a personal journey and a community gift.
Finding my voice through art by Jo-Anne
I wasn’t always an artist. In fact, as a child I was the one hiding my exercise book in the middle of the pile, hoping the teacher wouldn’t hold it up for the class to see. Creativity didn’t come naturally then — but I always loved making things. From sewing and batik to candle-making and photography, creating with my hands brought me joy.
After my divorce, I bought my own home and dreamed of a large tulip print to brighten my lounge. Instead of buying it, I decided to spend the money on art lessons, telling myself I could create my own décor. Five years later, at the age of 46, I finally signed up for my first class. I never painted those tulips, but I filled my walls with my own work — and discovered a passion that changed my life.
Today, painting is how I capture “moments in time.” Whether en plein air or from my own photographs, my art reflects the beauty, people, and culture of Cape Town and South Africa. I’m lucky to share this journey with my husband, Marc — my biggest supporter, critic, and tea-maker — who patiently waits while I paint outdoors.
Co-founding Canvas and Craft Studio has allowed me to share this love of art with others. It’s a place where creativity is celebrated, where new artists are encouraged, and where community grows through shared joy.
